Like the Horsehead Nebula poised over Orion’s nether-regions, Robot vs. Dinosaur’s latest sketch show, Pretty from a Distance, is a beacon to souls lost in the universe. Directed by RvD veteran Chris Othic, the 75-minute show addresses big questions about our place in the universe and the rituals of life. Unlike a lot of sketch comedy, it's got a lot of heart and minimal dick jokes. We think you'll like it and leave the theater chanting ""Not insignificant, but insignif-I-CAN!"
Starring:
Rammel Chan
Susie Gutowski
Mike Johnson
Becca Levine
Torian Miller
Nat Topping

Directed by Chris Othic

This is a remount of sorts of the sold out show we did at Sketchfest this year. So, if you missed that, come see this! If you saw that, come see this! We added 20-30 minutes of new material and two new actors. Mike Johnson, an old friend of RvD's, is back playing with us and making his debut with us is Torian Miller. The show also features two pieces I wrote that I also regard as two of my favorites. There's Dolphin Encounter featuring Nat Topping as a disgruntled dolphin people pay to "swim" with and Boris vs. Nature featuring Mike as the husband of a small family having a stare down with a giraffe at the zoo. That piece first appeared in 365 Sketches and I re-wrote it for this show.

I'm very proud of this show and hope you check it out. Everyone is operating at the top of their game. This may just be our best show from the top-notch writing to the excellent comic acting to Chris's confident direction.

Self-Publification

Last Saturday, I made my debut at one of my favorite Chicago shows, The Paper Machete. The Paper Machete was created by and is hosted by Christopher Piatt who describes it as "a free, weekly 'live magazine' covering pop culture, current events and American manners. Part spoken-word show, part vaudeville revue, The Paper Machete features comedians, journalists, storytellers and musical guests performing in the back room of north side bar. It’s a salon in a saloon." Chris asked me to do something about something from the news. On Thursday night, we settled on me addressing Amazon being pressured to remove an eBook about how a pedophile can practice their "craft" and not to get caught. My angle is was my own experience in self-publishing.

Here's what I wrote and performed. It started with me carrying a copy of my book up to the microphone.

This is a book I wrote. Sort of. In 2009, I wrote a comedy sketch a day for a year. This is all of them in one place. I didn’t write them to have a book, but they ended up in there. Not published by Simon and Schuster or Samuel French or some University Press. Published by me. And I hope that by the time I am done here, you are disgusted by it. Assuming you aren’t already.

November is National Novel Writing Month, also known as NaNoWriMo. Last year, the official NaNoWriMo website had 165,000 participants registered. 30,000 of them completed the goal of cranking out a 50,000 word novel from scratch. It’s like the marathon for out-of-shape would-be writers. If this year’s number of participants has increased like it has every other year, that means come December 1st, there could potentially be 40,000 new novels completed and published. Not from any big publishing house. Not placed in some fancy display at Borders. 40,000 new novels unleashed into the wild, available on-line as downloadable eBooks. We live in an age where anyone with a blog can be considered a published author, anyone with a webcam can be a filmmaker or porn star or both. We live in an age where anyone can create a piece of work and put it on the Internet for potential millions to see and then write about it on their own blogs. And most of what’s being generated out there is just crap.

Millions of people upload YouTube videos every day. Millions of bloggers post content every day, mostly recounts of vacations and videos of cats. I am guilty of both. The number of podcasts available for free just through iTunes is staggering. Musicians are using their laptops for recording studios and posting their work on-line. Although, in the music industry, it’s not called self-publishing, it’s called self-releasing. Which sounds more appropriate and makes me giggle.

In theater, it’s not unusual for a show to cancel if the number of people in the cast outnumbers the people in the audience. As a society, we’re getting close to having to cancel our show. There are more artists than audience. People complain about not being able to draw an audience to their show. That’s because the audience is busy elsewhere doing their own shows. In Chicago, you can see improv seven nights a week in a few different locations. Is there that much of a demand for it? No. No one is clamoring to see Uncle Billy’s Fun Sack do a montage at 11pm on a Sunday in the back of a dive bar. There are that many shows because there are that many people wanting and willing to do that show. Self-produced. The theater world’s version of self-published.

The problem with so much content being created and “published” is that there’s no filter. There’s no one sitting behind a desk going, “Ew. No. Not that one.” For many of us, that’s good news. A lot of good, interesting artists get a chance to be seen or heard. But when the floodgates are open, a lot of flotsam gets a chance, too. On October 28th, Amazon allowed Philip R. Greaves II, or in today’s vernacular, Phillip R. Greaves .2, to upload a new eBook. An experienced “published” author, he already has two other eBooks.

The other books on Amazon that Greaves wrote have nothing to do with sexual molestation. One is called
A Government of Service to All – “A discripeion of the political realities that influence us all.” And there’s my all time favorite, The Grand Delusion or What’s God Got To Do With It? Described as “An examination of man and his many notions of "God" with an aim toward disproving the existence of any universal intelengence of omnipotent creator. “ That’s right. He misspelled “intelligence.” The only thing being molested in these books is spelling. Or, as Greaves would write, “spieling.” Self-publishing is not only an assault on our morals and principles, it’s an assault on the English language.
((Note: I tried to link to these this morning, and it looks like Amazon has taken everything by Greaves off their website.))

His latest non-seller, a self-help book. The Pedophile's Guide to Love and Pleasure: a Child-lover's Code of Conduct. It offers advice to pedophiles afraid of becoming the center of retaliation and includes first-person descriptions of such encounters, purportedly written from a child's point of view.

The book triggered outrage on Twitter – our newest form of quick self-published shouts at the world. A chorus of comment leavers on the book’s Amazon page called for them to pull the book. Which they did do. Three weeks after it was made available. Not because of any principles, because of the bad press they were getting and the threat of a boycott. Look, I’m not defending pedophilia or a pedophile. I’m all for whatever floats your boat as long as it does no harm to anyone and, if another boat’s involved, it’s there because it wants to be there, is of legal boating age and you’re not a Somali pirate. Amazon initially refused to take the book down based on freedom of speech. Hard to argue against because then we start talking about where to draw lines.

Many critics claimed Amazon endorsed pedophilia just because they carried the book. They have many other books about pedophilia, fiction and non-fiction. From text books to Lolita. This one, however, tells people how to get away with it, which many people feel, goes too far. Easy to understand, but based on that logic, there’s more stuff for Amazon to take down. They also carry the Dexter books and DVDs, and I’m pretty sure they don’t endorse serial killing. Now, you might make the case that one is non-fiction and offers actual advice on how to get away with breaking the law. Except Dexter does exactly that. It’s a code of conduct for serial killers who don’t want to get caught.

They also carry other books that are literally instructional manuals on how to commit crimes. The Anarchist’s Cookbook, The Marijuana Growers Handbook and Decision Points by George W. Bush.

A more frightening book on Amazon that I found is Improvised Munitions Black Book, Vol. 1. Volume 1! There’s more to come. It gets rave customer reviews, mostly folks from Northern Ireland. “if you want a good book about explosives, rockets, chemical mixtures, how to build devices, and how to acquire ingredients, this book is for you.” That’s a direct quote. No protests in the comments section from anyone. A little more frightening is the accredited author. Self-published by the US Government. On the Amazon webpage there’s a section of “customers who bought this also bought…” which leads you to Uncle Sam’s other book, the U.S. Marine Corps Sniper Training Manual, just in case that DIY bomb didn’t go off.

Before the Pedophilia for Dummies book hit the headlines, its author claimed it had sold precisely one copy. After the media picked up the story, it had moved enough units to make the Amazon’s Top 100 list. Top 100 out of hundreds of thousands of books. Quite an accomplishment for a self-published eBook by an unknown author who rejects the oppression of spellcheck. I seriously doubt the books, were scooped up exclusively by pedophiles. That’s the double-edged sword of offensive material. One has to read it to be able to intelligently comment on it. Oh, not the people protesting. We all know the loudest protesters are the ones who didn’t read the book or see the movie. Sadly, for them, the digital age has taken its toll on book burnings. Used to be able to gather a bunch of copies up and set them on fire to demonstrate your disgust. Can’t throw a bunch of eBooks in a pile and hit delete.

Self-publishing is intoxicating. After I wrote a comedy sketch a day for a year, they were all produced last June. We had 26 directors putting up 26 shows with 176 actors over eleven nights at the Strawdog. I wanted to give the directors something special to say thank you for their hard work. I went to lulu.com, a self-publishing site. Although, lulu calls it “open publishing,” I guess because “it’s complicated” publishing didn’t sound very inviting. There, I uploaded the scenes into this book. With the click of a mouse, I became a published author. You can find the book on-line. Even at Amazon.

When I brought hard copies in to give to directors, other people asked me about buying one for themselves. Dollar signs shot off in my head like green and gold fireworks. I dreamt of being able to retire and just lie in a bed of royalties from book sales. That, of course, hasn’t happened. Instead of a bed, maybe a nice throw pillow of royalties. Not a big audience of readers for a telephone book sized tome of scripted sketch comedy by some guy.

I’m fine with that. It was meant as a souvenir of the event. Nothing more. But it would be nice to hit the Amazon Top 100 at least once, even for a moment. I mean, if a pedophile - who spells “perversity” with two “c”s - can do it… I just need to convince everyone there’s a reason to protest it. This thing (I hold up 365 Sketches) is vile and offensive.

Let me read some of the scene titles to you…

“Unicorns – Let’s Fuck Them Without Permission”

“Give The Elderly Aids”

“Anything Can Be A Urinal, Especially On A Train or At A Buffet”

“Lynching’s Aren’t Fun, Not Without Bungee Cords”

“Cancer is God’s Way of Saying Die, Already!”

Riled up, yet? It’s available on-line and in book form. A really big, easy to burn book. You can build a bonfire that will last for days. It’s also on sale at The Book Cellar. I think we should all march up there after. Everyone throw in a few bucks, I’m good for two dollars, and we buy a copy and set it on fire. Afterward, we can also have some wine and a sandwich. I love that place.

Greaves
.2, my fellow published author, was interviewed by The Smoking Gun, and insisted his book doesn't advocate for adults to harm children. "The best advice I can give a pedophile,” he says, “is accept that masturbation is your best friend.”

...which brings me back to the topic of self-publication.

Biting and Smiling

Hey! It's Bite and Smile!

A new website is being built devoted to 365 Sketches. You can see how much has not been done on it by clicking HERE.

I am currently in the midst of rewrites for 365, so it will be awhile before I'm back to updating Bite and Smile on a daily basis. You will certainly find at least a weekly update.

IMPORTANT SURVEY

I am pitching a project and want to know which show you would most want to see based on the title. Please leave your response in the comments section. Thanks.

THE BS NEWS QUIZ OF THE DAY

Yesterday, I asked...

"Six women in New Jersey are recovering after they received buttocks-enhancement injections containing what?"

50% said "gelatin" - It's the carrots and raisins that give the booty some "oompf!"

16% said "custard" - Thinking about it makes me a little big horny.

No one said "Elmer's Glue"

34% got it right with "caulk"

According to the Associated Press, Six women in New Jersey are recovering after they received buttocks-enhancement injections containing silicone used to caulk bathtubs. State health officials say the women, from Essex County, apparently underwent cosmetic procedures from unlicensed providers.

On the positive side, caulk in the butt does cut your heating bills in the winter.

Muriel, late 20s

Tabitha, late 20s

(Lights up on Muriel standing near the buffet table of a high school reunion. Tabitha approaches.)

TABITHA

Muriel? Muriel Klotz?

MURIEL

Yes?

TABITHA (hugs Muriel)

Oh, my God! I haven’t since you since we graduated.

MURIEL

That’s right. We haven’t seen each other since then…you.

TABITHA

You…don’t remember me…it’s Tabitha. Tabitha Letterhos.

MURIEL

Oh, sure. Tabitha! We took Chemistry together.

TABITHA

Biology.

MURIEL

Of course. I get all my sciences mixed up.

TABITHA

You still don’t remember me.

MURIEL

No, no. Of course, I do. Tabitha. Just you’re hair-

TABITHA

Is exactly the same way I wore it ten years ago.

MURIEL

Well, you know, we all have put on a few extra pounds.

TABITHA

Except me.

MURIEL

Except you, is what I was going to say. You look great.

TABITHA

Right. You know, I used to think you were somebody real special. Someone I really admired. And I fooled myself into thinking we were friends, maybe not close friends, but friends enough to be glad to see each other, get together for coffee and to laugh about old times. I wasn’t even on your radar in high school, was I? Well, sorry I bothered you, Muriel. Enjoy the ten-year reunion.

(She exits.)

CAST
Shackleton, 30s
Bigsby, 30s
Edmund, 30s
Marjorie, 30s

(We hear the sound of a cold, harsh, relentless wind. Lights come up on three men in parkas huddled together on the floor. They are in a small tent. Bigsby, the man in the middle, has a plain winter scarf wrapped around his eyes. He is flanked by Shackleton and Edmund. They surround a small lantern, which they have used to make tea. Shackleton tries to give Bigsby tea in a small metal cup. They all three speak with British dialects.)

SHACKLETON
Here, Bigsby. Here. Sip this. Slowly. It’s hot.

BIGSBY
Not hot enough, Sir. I wish it were hot enough to melt this dammed polar ice cap.

EDMUND (trying to warm his hands)
You would rather drown than freeze to death, Bigsby?

BIGSBY
Most certainly, Edmund. I would rather drown in warm water than just be another lump if ice under this Devil’s snow.

SHACKLETON
Enough of this talk of death, you two. I devote every ounce of energy and every conceivable breath towards making my way back home to England. One step at a time, if need be.

EDMUND
Aye. Even if it takes a hundred years.

SHACKLETON
Let’s hope it doesn’t take that long.

BIGSBY
Sir, thank you for the tea. But I must ask that you stop wasting what is left of our dwindling supplies on me.

SHACKLETON
You are a valued member of this expedition, Bigsby. Belay such talk.

EDMUND
He’s right, Sir.

SHACKLETON
Edmund!

EDMUND
He’s right! We have to face it. And thank the Lord you brought it up, Bigsby. We have used the same tea bag for a week.

BIGSBY
And we ran out of cream and sugar a month ago.

SHACKLETON
And what do you suggest, then, Bigsby?

BIGSBY
I am blinded from the snow. My feet are gangrened. You’ll make better progress if you simply-

EDMUND
Ate you?

BIGSBY
I meant just leave me behind.

EDMUND
But, you won’t have any need for your flesh. No need to let it go to waste.

SHACKLETON
Edmund. We are not going to eat our friend.

EDMUND
If it were me, I would let you eat me.

BIGSBY
You would not.

EDMUND
I would insist upon it.

SHACKLETON
No one is going to eat another man on my expedition. Is that clear?

EDMUND
Yes.

SHACKLETON
That’s better.

EDMUND
Unless you die before me.

SHACKLETON
Edmund!

EDMUND
Just being practical, Sir.

SHACKLETON
The whole point is moot.

BIGSBY
What do you mean?

SHACKLETON
I wasn’t going to tell either of you, but, since we’re alone here at the end of the earth, I may as well share the news with you.

EDMUND
Good news or bad news?

SHACKLETON
Bad. Very bad. Not only are we out of food, we are on our last drop of oil for the lamp. Soon we will have no more light or heat. On top of that, the compass is broken. We are hopelessly lost. For all I can tell, we’ve been traveling in circles.

BIGSBY
This could very well the last night of life for all of us.

EDMUND
I never thought it would end like this. Huddled together with two other men in a small tent, thousands of miles from my wife. If we are going to die, I prefer we die a respectable distance from one another.

SHACKLETON
We are the last bit of human contact you will ever have.

BIGSBY
Please take your hand off my leg, Sir.

SHECKLETON
Oh, sorry. Didn’t realize.

(The light of lantern fluctuates a few times before permanently going out. It is completely dark. )

SHACKLETON
I vowed to myself that some day I would go to the region of ice and snow and go on and on till I came to one of the poles of the earth, the end of the axis upon which this great round ball turns. We had seen God in His splendors, heard the text that Nature renders. We had reached the naked soul of man.

(From outside the tent, we see a flashlight. Whoever is carrying it, pulls back a tent flap and comes into the tent.)

MARJORIE
Bill? Are you guys calling it a night, already?

BIGSBY (pulling the scarf off his eyes, dropping his dialect)
Oh, no, Marjorie. The lantern just ran out of fuel, is all. We have flashlights. (All three of them pull out flashlights.)

EDMUND (dropped dialect)
Evening, Marjorie.

MARJORIE
Hi, Ted.

SHACKLETON (dropped dialect)
Chilly out tonight.

MARJORIE
I was thinking the same thing, Phil. So, I brought you guys some s’mores.

(They all three cheer!)

BIGSBY
Oh, but what will we heat them with? Raw s’mores suck.

MARJORIE
Not to worry. I brought out the electric hot plate and a pan. I ran an extension cord from the garage.

(Edmund takes the hot plate and pan and starts making s’mores.)

BIGSBY
You’re the best, Marjorie.

MARJORIE
You boys have a good night. (She turns to leave) Oh, and the kids wanted me remind you that they want to play in the tent tomorrow, with it being Saturday and all.

SHACKLETON
No, problem. We clear out first thing in the morning.

MARJORIE
Okay, now. Have a nice expedition.

(She exits.)

BIGSBY (back to British dialect)
Those rations ready, Edmund? I’m starving!

CAST:
Debra, 20s
Scott, 30s
Five Ninjas

(Lights up on Debra sweeping the floor of a coffee shop late at night. She wears a green apron and matching cap. Scott, the manager, crosses the stage carrying cash register rolls. Debra pauses and smiles at him.)

DEBRA
Long day, eh, Scott?

(Scott says nothing and does not even make eye contact with her as he passes. Debra goes back to sweeping.)

DEBRA (to the audience)
I’ve thought about it. I could be a great super hero. I’m invisible.

(Scott pokes his head out from the back of the store.)

SCOTT
Debra. Hurry up. I want to close up.

DEBRA
Unfortunately, it’s selective invisibility. I can be seen when people need something from me. (Her cell phone rings.) Hi, Mom… I’m not psychic. It’s a cell phone. I can tell when you’re calling. …Toilet paper and milk… Can’t it wait till morning? …Yes, I can swing by the store. …And coffee? Mom, I get free coffee from here. …You’ve never tried it. … Fine. Toilet paper, milk and Maxwell House. That’s going to mean another forty-five minutes before I get home… Just tired is all. And I wanted to watch some television before I crashed… You’re right. You’re right. Milk and toilet paper are more important… Don’t wait up. (She hangs up) Please don’t wait up.

(She resumes sweeping. Scott pokes his head out.)

SCOTT
Jesus, Debra. You’re not done, yet.

DEBRA
Almost, Scott. Sorry. My mom called and I got distracted.

SCOTT
Tell your mom that if she’s going to keep bugging you at work, she can come down here and fight the ninjas.

DEBRA
Do the what, now?

SCOTT
Fight the ninjas? Hello?

(Just then five ninjas emerge from the shadows and circle Debra. She quickly dispatches most of them using her broom and a series of kickass kung fu moves. One remaining ninja grabs Scott and threatens to kill him with his sword. Debra drops her broom in compliance. She then seductively removes her hat, shaking her hair loose. She then removes her apron. The ninja and Scott are both very interested in this sexier version of Debra. Debra throws the apron at the ninja who drops his sword trying to defend himself against her apron. She quickly dispatches him, snapping his neck.)

SCOTT
Good job, Debra. Nicely done.

DEBRA
Thanks, Scott.

SCOTT
Now, hurry up and finish cleaning so we can close up. After you dispose of the bodies, you’ll have to mop. Dead ninjas on the floor are a health code violation. (Debra looks at her watch) the longer you take; the longer we’ll be here. C’mon. Tick-tock. (He exits. Debra starts to drag one of the ninjas off stage.)

DEBRA
The hourly wage sucks, but I get a free pound of coffee a week and health benefits.

G. Notary, 50s
Cassandra, 50s
Eduardo, 30s
Blaine, 50s
Nadia, 20s

(Lights up on an old, vacant bank lobby. G.Notary, dressed all in black save for the Holiday Inn bath towel wrapped around his waist. He is pacing frantically talking into a cell phone.)

G. NOTARY (on phone)
Make sure it’s a hermaphrodite. Not a fuckin’ tranny…and shuh-he has to be okay with me calling her-im Nadia. …Yes. A hermaphrodite. …Why? Because I’m not a fag, that’s why! (Hangs up) Cassandra! Cassandra!

(Cassandra rushes in carrying an incredibly large cup of coffee and a zebra head.)

CASSANDRA
Right here, G. Right here!

G. NOTARY
Cassandra, we are going to transform this bank lobby in just twenty minutes into the most amazing art installation Des Moines has ever seen. Beasts of the earth roaming through the circles of life. Rivers of hungry saliva that course through a man’s soul. The power of nature juxtaposed with the power of hard, shiny surfaces and chained pens.

CASSANDRA
Very powerful, G. Very powerful.

(G’s phone rings. He picks it up. Cassandra starts to walk away, but he snaps his fingers to keep her there.)

G. NOTARY
G. Notary, speak! …Has she given birth? Excellent. …No, no, don’t rinse it off. We want as much placenta as possible. More the merrier. Give the mother a tranq or something. (Hangs up) The rhinoceros has given birth.

CASSANDRA
That’s great news, G!

G. NOTARY
Why are you still here?

CASSANDRA
I’m not.

(She quickly exits.)

G. NOTARY
Eduardo! Eduardo!

(Eduardo enters. He is dressed as an animal, something with a tail, like a bull, but has his own shaved human head.)

EDUARDO
Right here, G.

G. NOTARY
Eduardo! I shall devour a shake made of iced milk, chocolated. A salad, sans raisins. Dressed in ranch and the love of a motherly woman. And Frenched fries.

EDUARDO
The usual.

G. NOTARY
Yes. The usual.

(Eduardo starts to exit.)

G. NOTARY
You have a lovely skull.

EDUARDO
Thank you.

(G’s phone rings.)

G. NOTARY
G. Notary, speak! …Yes, yes! We start in less than twenty minutes. Get your garbanzo buns here, Rudolph. …And bring …Nadia. She is my muse. This installation is dedicated to her, Rudolph. Whoa, oh, whoa! My hermit like heart seals itself off like a crab shelled, yet its meat is tender and buttery … She must come. Nadia must come. Tell her there will be appletinis! (He hangs up) Why does my art bring such torment into my life? Why do I not have a breast in my hand, right now?

(G. collapses on the floor and flails himself. Blaine enters. He wears a pinstriped suit and walks with stately elegance. Very Tim Gunn.)

BLAINE
Smells like a funeral home in here. Pine-Sol and formaldehyde. G. your gnashing of teeth is tiresome. You must no longer mourn the loss of our father’s love. Soldier on. Bring forth your manhood and thrust it upon the marbled walls of this lobby. Set your jaw, tell the world to fuck off, and suck on the teat of life.

G. NOTARY
Nadia is not coming. I do this for her.

BLAINE
You do this because it is breath to you. It is your water and your life. If you did not do this, you would suffocate. Or dehydrate. Nadia is a thumbnail stabbing at the chambers of your heart. Brush it away. Brush it away.

(G. Notary stands and walks over to Blaine. He hugs him. They slap each other. They hug, again.)

G. NOTARY AND BLAINE
Driver of madness, drive on!

(Blaine exits. G’s phone rings.)

G. NOTARY
G. Notary, speak!... I was crying, that’s all… A better question is why aren’t we all crying all the time? …How many pillows? How many pillows? How the hell should I know? However many pillows it takes to fill this lobby up to my hips, that’s how many. I should be wading in pockets of downy goodness.

(Cassandra enters. She no longer carries the world’s largest coffee cup. She is attempting to eat the world’s largest bagel.)

CASSANDRA
G. When does the show begin?

G. NOTARY
A better question is when does the show end? When does it ever end?

(Eduardo enters carrying a bag of food from McDonald’s.)

EDUARDO
Here is your food, G. Extra raisins.

(Blaine enters. His pant legs are rolled up to his knees and he is barefoot. Flowers stick out between his toes.)

BLAINE
The king is dead.

(Nadia enters dressed in white Jackie Kennedy-era attire.)

NADIA
Hello, G.

G. NOTARY
Hello, Nadia.

NADIA
I came.

G. NOTARY
I see.

NADIA
I’m leaving you.

G. NOTARY
I know.

NADIA
After the appletinis.

(She exits.)

G. NOTARY
I knew that, too.

(G looks sad and everyone looks sympathetic. They surround him in stage-picture worthy half-hugs and hold their poses. G’s phone rings.)

G. NOTARY (picks up)
G. Notary, speak! …Hermaphrodite! Look it up!

Week 25, Day 171 - “Down on the Farm”

“Down on the Farm”
Written by Joe Janes

CAST:
Farmer Brown, 50s
Sherman, 12
Various cows

(Lights up on Farmer Brown sitting on his front porch rocking in his chair. Sherman, a small boy, approaches him.)

SHERMAN
Hi, Farmer Brown!

FARMER BROWN
Well, hello there, Sherman.

SHERMAN
Guess what we learned about in school today?

FARMER BROWN
How to make a taco?

SHERMAN
Nope.

FARMER BROWN
How to count to 3,472?

SHERMAN
Nope.

FARMER BROWN
I know, I know. How to make a bomb out of fertilizer.

SHERMAN
Maybe I should just tell you.

FARMER BROWN
That’s a good idea.

SHERMAN
We learned all about dairy farms, like yours.

FARMER BROWN
Like mine?

SHERMAN
Just like yours.

FARMER BROWN
What did they tell you?

SHERMAN
They said cows live on farms. During the day, they graze on grass in open fields and at night sleep on beds of hay in barns, like that one.

FARMER BROWN
That? That’s just for show. I rent it out for parties and tourists like to have their picture taken in front of it. The cattle’s all in that building over there.

SHERMAN
That windowless metal shed?

FARMER BROWN
I still call it a barn. What else did the teacher tell you?

SHERMAN
Well, she said that whenever you need milk for your family, you just grab a bucket and milk one of the cows.

FARMER BROWN
Ha! Shows how much your teacher knows. (puts his finger to the side of his nose) A dealer doesn’t sample his own stuff. (wink) Want to visit them cows? See what it’s really like?

SHERMAN
You bet I do.

FARMER BROWN
Right this way, Sherman!

(They walk across the stage. Farmer Brown takes out keys and undoes a series of locks on a door.)

SHERMAN
Gosh, Farmer Brown, why so many locks?

FARMER BROWN
Cows are money, Sherman. Your parents ever teach you to lock up your valuables?

SHERMAN
Just my bike.

FARMER BROWN
Well, multiply the value of your bike by a million.

SHERMAN
Would if I could.

FARMER BROWN
And that’s the value of my cows.

(Farmer Brown opens the door, but before they go in…)

FARMER BROWN
Now, Sherman, you’re about to see a special place. A place many little boys never get to see. Are you ready?

SHERMAN
More than ever, Farmer Brown!

FARMER BROWN
Then enter and be amazed by Farmer Brown’s Real Barn.

(They enter and see basically a large, plumpy pile of live cows. About a dozen. Stacked on another in something like a cow pyramid. Off to the side in the corner is one lone cow standing on a milk crate with a black garbage bag over his head and his upper legs spread out holding wires.)

SHERMAN
Wow! There’s so many of them in such a small space.

FARMER BROWN
I told you it was amazing.

SHERMAN
There must be a dozen cows there.

FARMER BROWN
Oh, way more. Hundreds more. This is just the tip of the bovine pyramid. See, there’s a hole in the floor.

SHERMAN
Why are they stacked like this?

FARMER BROWN
Makes it easier to store them and feed them.

SHERMAN
Can I feed them?

FARMER BROWN
Nope. It’s all done by machines. Twice a day, they get hosed down with nutrient-laced water. And once a day, they’re sprinkled with a mixture of ground up corn, newspaper, Valium and animal remnants.

SHERMAN
Animal remnants?

FARMER BROWN
Whatever’s left of a cow that we can’t sell. You know, the stuff they won’t even put in a hot dog. Nothing goes to waste around here.

SHERMAN (pointing to cow standing in corner)
Did that cow do something bad?

FARMER BROWN
Yes, he did, Sherman. He was born a male. See, we need pregnant female cows to produce a lot of milk.

SHERMAN
Don’t you need boy cows to make the girl cows pregnant?

FARMER BROWN
Not in this day and age. We use other methods, such as artificial insemination.

SHERMAN
Artificial insemination?

FARMER BROWN
That’s where I make the girl cow pregnant. (Sherman and Farmer Brown stare at each other for a moment. Sherman clearly is getting a disturbing image in his mind.) …With science!

SHERMAN
Oh, science!

FARMER BROWN
He has to stand there for a month and then we’ll turn him into veal. It’s his own fault, really.

SHERMAN
Dumb cow.

FARMER BROWN
You’re a smart boy, Sherman. Have a lollipop!

(Farmer Brown gives Sherman a lollipop, which he eagerly accepts and unwraps.)

SHERMAN
Thanks, Farmer Brown.

FARMER BROWN
Let me get a picture of you with my brownie and you can show it to your teacher.

(Farmer Brown takes a small instant camera out of his pocket.)

SHERMAN
That would be great.

FARMER BROWN
Stand right next to the cow pile.

SHERMAN
Like this!

(He smiles and points at the cows with the lollipop in his mouth, just like that pic from Abu Ghraib.)

FARMER BROWN
Say, “Cheeese!”

(Sherman says “cheese!” as the cows “moo” pathetically. Farmer Brown snaps the shot. Blackout.)
